CBYRA Donor & Grant Programs

CBYRA is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization; all membership dues, service fees, and contributions are used to support CBYRA’s programs and services on behalf of the sport of sailboat racing. Important aspects of this mission are the CBYRA Donor and CBYRA Grant programs, one of which is the Fund for Chesapeake Sailors

Fund for Chesapeake Sailors

The Fund for Chesapeake Sailors is a donor account intended to provide grants to those member sailors involved in campaigns for the Olympics and National and International regattas and championships. The Fund is solely funded by donations. No donation may be designated to any specific sailor or campaign. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.


Grant Description & Application Procedure

The Fund for Chesapeake Sailors (FCS) is a grant intended to provide partial or full financial support for CBYRA members to compete in ladder, area, championship, and other regattas or campaigns. The FCS is not a designated fund for racing campaigns.

Each year, the CBYRA Executive Committee may distribute monies from the FCS account based on need of the applicant, number of overall requests, and available funds. 

Deadline Date: The deadline for applying for the FCS is at least two months prior to the event. The CBYRA Executive Committee may reduce this deadline for good cause.

FCS Grant Requirements:

The request shall be IN WRITING and delivered to the FCS Committee (c/o CBYRA) before the deadline date.

The person (or persons) making the request shall be current member(s) of CBYRA and active participants in a CBYRA recognized class.

The person(s) making the request will be the people competing in the event(s).

The written application shall include:

Completed FCS application form (available from CBYRA – see below for contact info). This form includes: name, address, contact information, birth date, gender, crew members, event date(s), anticipated budget, brief sailing and racing résumé, means to recognize support of FCS, summary of sailing goals, and brief discussions on (1) applicants need for the grant and (2) how FCS grants would assist in obtaining these needs and goals.

Letter of recommendation from a Coach, CBYRA Member Club, or CBYRA Recognized Class.

Review and Selection Process:

The FCS Committee will review the requests received by the deadline, clarify any details, and develop recommendations to the Executive Committee.

Interviews with applicant(s) requesting FCS grants may be necessary at a special FCS Committee meeting.

Recommendations from the FCS Committee will be presented to the Executive Committee at the next scheduled meeting after the deadline (or after finishing review).

The Executive Committee will vote to accept the recommendations, request additional information from the application, make any necessary adjustments and stipulations to requests, or not fund a request(s).

CBYRA will provide a written response on each request.

Preference will be given to:

Ladder and Championship events associated with CBYRA, US SAILING, or CBYRA Member Clubs.

Prestigious and unique events offering outstanding competition.

Demonstrated need of the applicant.

Funding:

Grants are distributed from the Fund for Chesapeake Sailor account.  Subject to available money in the account and viability of the program, there are no limits to grants available in any given year.  No grants need to be awarded in any given year.  CBYRA will accept donations and repayments to the FCS.  The FCS will carry over each year.

Payment & Receipts:

Unless specifically authorized by the CBYRA Executive Committee, payment of the grant will be made after completion of the event. 

The applicant is required to provide a full accounting of receipts, costs, etc, up to the amount of the grant.

Publicity:

When approved by the Executive Committee, notice will be published on the CBYRA Web Site, and CBYRA will notify the applicant of grant.

FCS Awardees shall be expected to make appearances at CBYRA events if possible in order to help promote the FCS.

FCS Awardees shall be expected to provide a written report about the regatta or event which CBYRA may publicize.
