JUNIOR E-NEWSLETTER (JULY 27, 2009)

Message from the Junior Division Chair:

Last week we had some wonderful junior regattas – beginning on Tuesday at Indian Landing Boat Club, then Rock Hall YC’s Green Fleet regatta, followed by Sears/Bemis/Smythe eliminations and finally Corsica River YC’s annual regatta!

And while all of this was going on, several area sailors headed out to Southern California for USODA Nationals.  Congrats to top Chesapeake finisher Maeve White from Annapolis YC, who also placed 5th overall at USODA Girls Nationals!  And, many more local Opti racers are going beyond the bay for events including Club 420 Nationals in Jamestown, RI and USODA New Englands in Newport, RI.   Of course, our primary focus is here on the Chesapeake, and there’s still a lot more junior racing before the transition from summer sailing to fall sailing!

We’ve figured out how to get Corum High Point Standings uploaded onto the web site on a timely basis – and we have lots of qualified sailors, and the competition is intense!  Check it out – and if questions please contact the CBYRA Jr. Scorer Steve Swenson (sswenson@aarp.org).

Last Monday I mentioned that all the results-to-date would be uploaded on the Schedule/Results page no later than last Tuesday.   Some CBYRA results that we’ve received are still not up – but we’re trying.  And, if your club uploads the results to your own club’s website (we hope you do!), and then provides CBYRA a link to your website – well, unfortunately that doesn’t work.  CBYRA won’t accept links, it will only accept e-mailed files such as pdf documents.  Sorry about that.

Speaking of the Schedule/Results page, the Jr. Division Committee and I believe it’s frustrating to click around this page poking for documents and/or results, getting sent back to the main page, etc.  However, CBYRA’s IT Committee has informed me in writing that there will be no work requests to the junior web site considered until 2010.  FYI.

There has been some confusion about how to score the Red/White/Blue fleets properly, and there have been some inconsistencies in the way clubs have done it.  (Red/White/Blue scoring inconsistencies have NOT affected the Corum High Point standings at all.)  See below for a description of how USODA (the Opti class), requires Red/White/Blue be scored.

As always, please feel free to contact me anytime at juniors@cbyra.org .  I look forward to seeing you out on the water.

REGATTA REPORT – INDIAN LANDING BOAT CLUB:

We at Indian Landing Boat Club thoroughly enjoyed hosting our annual junior regatta on Tuesday, July 21st, 2009.  The weather was just about perfect but for some challenges with wind shifts which are typical for us at our end of the river.  Band camp at Arlington Echo, our neighbor, even provided music for our added enjoyment!  Between opti green, red, white, blue fleets, laser radials, and 420s, we had a total of 70 boats/85 sailors from a total of 11 participating clubs.  We do not currently have any traveling sailors, so this is a fun way to introduce our young sailors to what regattas are all about.  Thank you to all of the participants and guests who joined us for the day.  Hope to see you next year!  Submitted by:  Anne Dierdorff Thomas

REPORT FROM ROCK HALL YC GREEN FLEET REGATTA:

Thursday July 23rd was a great day, with 39 sailors, light winds, a great clinic, and good experience for our green fleeters. Thanks to all sailors and volunteers!  Submitted by:  Connie Ranney

OPTI SCORING THE “USODA WAY”:

Scoring for the combined Red/White/Blue fleets is easy for race officers.  But when some widely used computer programs calculate the winners of the Red/White/Blue fleets, sometimes the programs do so in a manner not in accordance with the rules USODA uses for sanctioned regattas.

The USODA regatta manual (if you’re really interested, here’s the link – Section 8.3:  http://www.iod95.com/info/faq/regatta_forms/SEC%20USODA%20Regatta%20Manual%202003.pdf ) specifies that Red/White/Blue fleets be scored via “Overall Scoring”.  Computer programs sometimes separate the fleets and score them individually rather than by using each overall race result.

Here’s an example:  Suppose Blue Fleeter A is the top Blue Fleeter in a regatta – only beaten by a few Red Fleeters.  Assume Blue Fleeter A has 23 points, and the next Blue Fleeter has 24 points.  Blue Fleeter A wins, right?  The answer is yes, according to the “Overall Scoring” method per USODA.  However, some computer programs…when breaking out the fleets, separate and only compare the results of Blue Fleeters vs. Blue Fleeters, and so the result for racers A and B for exact same regatta based on the software configuration could be that Blue Fleeter A has 9 points, but Blue Fleeter B has only 8 points, making Blue Fleeter B the winner.  But that’s not the “Overall Scoring” method in the USODA manual.

Sound complicated?  Apparently it isn’t that difficult.  First, the Jr. Division Committee would like to see uniformity in scoring, and recommends the Overall Scoring method per USODA guidelines.  And, we are very fortunate that two experienced race officers and CBYRA members, Barbara Beigel-Vosbury and Chip Thayer, have both offered to help any clubs who are trying to figure out how to make their software work the USODA way!  Just email Barbara or Chip at:  bvosbury@msn.com or cthayer@annapolisyc.org .  And see the CBYRA Jr website for some more detailed instructions if you use JavaScore.  Or, to discuss this further please email juniors@cbyra.org .  (Thanks Barbara and Chip for volunteering to help other race officers figure this out and use their software per the USODA method.)

Are you on www.Facebook.com ?  If so, type in CBYRA and you’ll easily find “CBYRA Junior Sailing”.  Become a fan, and look for information, photos etc. in the future!

HOW LONG CAN I STAY IN GREEN FLEET???:
This is an often asked questions, and here’s how USODA answers the question:
“As long as you desire. Green Fleet is for sailors who do not wish to enter into large, competitive regattas. Green Fleet now provides “participation awards” and is not supposed to give 1, 2 or 3 place trophies. This discourages ‘trophy hunting’ and allows the sailor who wants to be on the water, but not in a serious race, to enjoy sailing with her/his friends and without competitive pressures.”

CORUM CUP STICKERS HAVE ARRIVED – AND THEY ARE FREE!:

C420:  CJ BUCKLEY TEAM RACE:

Online registration is open for the CJ Buckley Team Race.  The summer's premier junior team race event will also be the Club 420 National Team Race Championship this summer, and will be taking place Aug 3-5 (Monday thru Wednesday).  This year's event should be really tremendous; expanded to 3 days, running out of Goddard Park in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.  As usual, this event should feature excellent racing, and a terrific atmosphere; we encourage team racers of all levels attend.  The goal is to create lots of racing between similar ability levels, and to have the most fun possible on the water.

Boats who don't have a team but want to sail will be made into teams at the regatta; just register as an individual boat online.  The fee is $50 per sailor or $100 per boat, and that includes lunch all three days, dinner two nights, and all the team racing you can handle.

CJ Buckley lost a valiant fight with cancer in 2002, at the age of 17.  A member of the Tabor Academy and Greenwich Bay Sailing Teams, he was a fierce competitor who especially enjoyed team racing.  This regatta began in his honor in 2003, and has become one of the summer's most popular regional events, this year expanded to the national stage.  Please come join us in celebrating a great friend by playing the game we all love!

This is will be the most fun your sailors will have this summer - if you have any questions, please email me or call me.  www.cjbuckleyregatta.net.  (Submitted by:  Justin Assad, Head Coach, University of Vermont Sailing Team)
